They have the same fundamental controls, actions and the concept of both games is exactly the same. Both games are incredibly similar when it comes to gameplay. The default textures of Minecraft are slightly better than those of Minetest, so the point goes to Minecraft. Not only that, but they are have a lot more bugs and generally aren’t as cool as those in Minecraft. Mobs in minetest are only available via mods. This point goes to Minecraft without a doubt. But this is an unbiased review afterall). Minecraft is quite similar, but not to the same extent (sorry Minecraft fans. In addition, there is generally more freedom in modding as minetest is more open-source and designed to be tailor-made to suit every player's wants. While both games have many similar mods, I prefer the World Edit tools of Minetest over those of Minecraft, as they allow you to edit/replace/create much more large-scale regions of the world at once, and have a greater variety of shapes that can be made via server commands (eg – domes, cylinder, etc). But with this one, I have to give the point to Minetest. Aside from that, I personally like them both equally, as there is very little difference.īoth games offer tons of sick mods. Minecraft can generate far superior forests/trees, and (as of now) there are a lot more seeds available. Very few (and I mean very few) worlds ever reach the 50,000 node mark in either game, let alone 31,000,000.Īnd by the way, this limit is not due to software limitations, but instead is meant to prevent extremely large files from forming while exploring a world in-game.īoth games can have modified map gen via mods, however I generally prefer that of minecraft by a very small margin. That’s quite a staggering difference, but it’s not necessarily a good reason to favor Minecraft over Minetest. Minetest worlds can extend 50,000 nodes in all directions while Minecraft’s worlds can span up to 31,000,000. Minetest Mods are coded in Lua, which is tailor-made for game design and is easy to learn. This means that Minetest can handle more action without lagging. C++ is not as commonly seen with games like Minecraft, however it runs significantly faster than Java. Minetest runs off of C++, which is more often involved in low-level computer processing and is frequently used in games that use high graphics, such as Call of Duty. Minecraft runs off of Java, which is a versatile and popular language that is very well-suited for simple games (simple meaning a game that does not require a lot of complex processing and rendering of detailed graphics, like Call of Duty). Minetest was first released in October of 2010 while the first final version of Minecraft wasn’t released until November of 2011 (there were some alpha versions before that, but they were not like the Minecraft we all know and love) I am not implying that one is better than the other I am simply trying to provide all of the information necessary for you to create an informed and valid opinion.įirst off, you should know that Minetest is not (I repeat NOT) a rip-off or clone of Minecraft. This is an unbiased comparison between Minetest and Minecraft. This is not intended to start an argument and I expect you to be mature enough not to do so. After reading all sorts of biased and uninformed comments regarding Minetest, I thought I would shine some more -accurate- light on the topic.
